Passion Pit

101.9 The Mix had these guys on last night, which was pleasantly surprising. Got wind that they're (along with Chairlift) going to be at the Apple Store on Michigan Avenue, Chicago on Thursday, August 6 for a pre-Lolla appearance. Woot! Below, The Reeling, from their latest album, Manners.

Merce Cunningham

What a loss. Merce Cunningham just died a few minutes ago. Amazing choreographer and all around artist.

Language Barriers

Neat little video with how-to, do, and don't sections for different countries in Europe. It's crazy how one simple symbol in American culture can mean something completely different in another. Here's to effective communication! Thanks to Nat.

500 Days of Summer

In theatres July 17.

How to create a butter sculpture, How to use your cell phone as a wingman, and How to win $2,000 from are among the few things you can look up on Howcast. Pretty nifty little site, chock full of great tidbits! But more than the site, I am drawn to the graphic work done by Pentagram on the identity, icons and how those get integrated into the site and videos. Read more about the process here.

Jenifer Altman

Intriguing juxtapositions. Stimulating stories.

Found out about this non-profit via an article on the NYTimes entitled, Clean, Sexy Water. charity:water is a group devoted to providing clean water for the less fortunate of the world by building wells. The impact this group has made in a short three years is staggering, having raised $10 million from 50,000 donors, providing clean water to a million people in Africa and Asia. They have also been using technology to make donors' impact feel real and not a million miles away. For example, there is a feature on their site that allows you to locate the wells around the glob using Google Earth.

The coolest part about this story (in my opinion), is the founder's story. Scott Harrison is his name and club promoting used to be his game. After living the fast and furious lifestyle, he felt spiritually bankrupt and ended up joining forces with Mercy Ships where he did a 360. He now uses his natural gift of promoting to solicit donations and grow this non-profit. Now that is something powerful.

I am both inspired and challenged by charity:water since it is truly faith in action. Thank you for the good work that is being done and for the example that has been set.

Big New Ideas

A new design studio co-started by one of my school friends, Tino Chow. View their new website here! No work yet, but soon to come is my bet.

Tino is a really awesome, energetic guy who is always doing something crazy. Like right now, he's biking cross country and raising money and awareness for affordable housing needs. He's got a camera attached to his bike-- named Blue Steel--that takes a picture every 60 seconds, which can be viewed here. Read more about this ride here.

Anyways, congrats to you Tino on the launch of your studio!

Dior & Lacroix

From an article in the NYTimes about couture and how it's really not about luxury but about having the conviction that taste matters. For more, listen to the audio commentary, coupled by a more expansive slide show.

Stephanie Jacobsen

I have never been a fan of Melrose Place, but after seeing some of the previews for the new season this fall, my interest has been peaked! Mostly because of the beautiful face below, Stephanie Jacobsen. A Hong Kong native who grew up in Sydney Australia, Stephanie plays the role of Lauren Yung, a sexy med school student. Interesting factoid: her mom is Portuguese and her father is Chinese-Norwegian-English.

Olivia Bee

This artist is only 15. Her work is stunning and mature. Shots like the second one remind me of Francesca Woodman with the female subjects and self portraiture, but not as dark or haunting. View more work here.
